Students
Your goal is to Communicate your scientific Creativity and Competence through your project presentation, logbook and report! Through out, you will be working above your grade-level with your teacher-parent as your partner. Your job is to have a good attitude, dig in and see how far you can go!
Parents
Your goal is to teach your student how to apply the scientific method to a selected problem or engineering goal. We believe it is a partnership between you and your student where he/she takes responsibility for more of the project as they grow in competence over the years.
Younger students will need a lot of handholding and more of a "team" approach to see how it is done. We do not expect 3rd and 4th graders to plan, execute and document all by themselves. On the other hand, the project should be "age-appropriate" because the student will be judged on their presentation and understanding of all aspects of the project.
5th and 6th graders will need help too, but they should be doing more of the work. Parents can help best brainstorming with the student, finding background research, co-planning, keeping the student on track and formatting/editing the log, report, etc. where the student has provided the main content.
7th to 12th graders should be ready to compete at the regional level against other private and public school students. This requires them to do all the work, or acknowledge what part they did not do. They are only judged on what they did do. They must have a thorough grasp of their project, able to discuss it clearly in a conversational manner. A cookbook project will generally not make it far. The best project ideas come from things your student already likes to do. Guide your child to think about what can be measured, controled, improved, what would be helpful to many people?
